Maryland Lakes

Did you know that Maryland does not have any natural lakes? In fact, it is the ONLY U.S. State without any natural lakes! That is only possible, I suppose, due to arbitrary boundary lines; however, the lines do exist, so now we have this fun factoid. The reason for there being no natural lakes (we have over 100 man-made bodies of water) has to do with multiple factors.

First, and most importantly, during the last Ice Age in North America, there was no glacial activity that extended out this way, leaving the lands mostly undisturbed. Given that most natural lakes in North America have a habit of forming from glacial activity, Maryland was spared the geological excavation and subsequent melting that would eventually form a lake…or several.

Second, the (natural) events that could cause a lake to eventually disappear are rooted into the natural terrain of the eastern U.S. coastal lands, especially Maryland. We don’t just have the Atlantic Ocean, we have the Chesapeake Bay, and we are, as a State, nearly completely and totally part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Rivers run through and deposit into the Bay. Additionally, channel formation tends to drain them, should this occur.

Third, we know that a bog or swamp is the likely fate of a dying lake, until it ultimately fills up (sedimentation) and dries up (evapotranspiration). This is interesting considering how reedy and swampy parts of Maryland are – makes you wonder if we were the land of lakes. OR JUST ONE GIANT LAKE! In fact, it is possible that Buckles Bog is evidence of Maryland’s natural lakes, once upon a time, but…fare thee well, Buckles Bog. ‘Tis no more.

The lakes we do have in Maryland are all man-made, created through damming rivers. As for what to call them? Those that are used for recreation are dubbed “lakes”, while those used for hydroelectric power and flood control are aptly named reservoirs. Apparently, there is no hard rule for naming/labeling, but this is the standard that Maryland seems to have chosen!

Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed this little fun fact about Maryland!
